Data Analysis and Presentation

Math Standard: Measurement

Apply appropriate techniques, tools and formulas to determine measurements:
  • Solve problems involving scale factors, using ratio and proportion.
Math Standard: Representation

Create and use representations to organize, record, and communicate mathematical ideas.

Select, apply, and translate among mathematical representations to solve problems.

Use representations to model and interpret physical, social, and mathematical phenomena.

How will Marci determine the size of craters on the Moon?

Marci can look up the diameter of the Moon (in kilometers), she can measure the diameter of the Moon in the pictures, and she can measure the diameter of a crater in our pictures.  Marci can then use this information to set up a ratio to determine the actual size of the crater in kilometers.

  • What physical parameter are you trying to determine?   (in Marci’s case, the size of craters on the Moon)

  • What measurements are you making in order to determine this parameter?  (in Marci’s case, the size of craters in a picture of the Moon)

  • After you have made your measurements, what must you do with these data in order to determine that physical parameter?   (in Marci’s case, she must make the ratio shown above and solve for Crater Size on the Moon)

  • How many significant figures should you use when you:
a.    Write down your measurements?
b.    Calculate your results?

  • What does the number of significant figures you use say about the uncertainty in your measurement?

  • What will be the best way to present your data so that people will understand your measurement?  Is a graph helpful?  Do you need to show a table?
